The Florida Senate will be meeting soon to decide what bills they will hear for the 2010 session.
We need to let these senators know that patients are suffering because of legislative barriers to care, that 48 states recognize the ability of Nurse Practitioners to prescribe that care, and that patients are routinely sent to the ER for care that Nurse Practitioners are educated to provide.
Please email and call the Senate health care committee members listed below and let them know that patients suffer because of legislative barriers preventing Nurse Practitioners from prescribing controlled substances.
Here is a suggested email for you to cut and paste:
Dear Senator
I am writing to you today about an urgent matter.
Many patients in Florida are suffering needlessly because of legislative barriers to health care.
Everyday it is estimated that hundreds of patients who are uninsured or who receive Medicaid or Medicare, must go to emergency rooms to get medications. These patients need medication for cancer pain, anxiety, attention deficit disorder medications, cough medication with codeine, diarrhea medication, and pain medicine.
Why is this happening? Because these patients are cared for by Nurse Practitioners who are prohibited by an outdated state law from prescribing these medications.
Forty-eight other states in our nation allow patients to receive these same medications from Nurse Practitioners saving needless suffering and untold dollars for their state budgets.
In this era of health care reform, shouldn't we be utilizing all health care professionals to their fullest educational training in order to reach each citizen of our state?
I urge you to join the 48 other states in our nation and lift the ban that prevents patients from receiving care and causes them to suffer needlessly.
Sincerely,
Here are the websites of your Senators that need to hear from you!
