Update from the Florida Department of Health - Attention All Prescribers

Posted about 6 years ago by Regina Pommer

If you are a prescriber who is registered with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and authorized to prescribe controlled substances pursuant to 21 U.S.C. s. 822, you must complete a board-approved continuing education course on prescribing controlled substances as part of the biennial license renewal. You will be asked to provide information regarding your DEA registration at the time you apply for renewal.

For prescribing practitioners other than APRNs1 and PAs2, this requirement was signed into law by Governor Rick Scott on March 20, 2018, (HB 21, Chapter No. 2018-13 Laws of Florida) creating section 456.0301, F.S.:

(1)(a) The appropriate board shall require each person registered with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and authorized to prescribe controlled substances pursuant to 21 U.S.C. s. 822 to complete a board-approved 2-hour continuing education course on prescribing controlled substances.

1 s. 464.013(3)(b), F.S.

2 s. 458.347(4)(e)3., F.S.
