Outstanding Nurse Week Events: UF Nursing Hosts History Lecture & Special Nursing Exhibit

Posted over 4 years ago by Jean Aertker

In celebration of NP week 2019, UF Nursing hosted Dr. Julie Fairman to speak on Nursing History. Dr. Fairman, Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, is the author of several books, but one especially about the NP role: "Making Room in the Clinic."

Kim Curry, Editor of JAANP and Jean Aertker traveled to UF on Tuesday, November 12 to hear the lecture and tour the National Library of Medicine's Traveling Exhibit of historical postcards (“Pictures of Nursing: The Zwerdling Postcard Collection”) This depicts popular perceptions of nursing through the late 19th and early 20th century, and explains how those perceptions influenced the evolution of the nursing profession.

Nursing's image has certainly changed over the years, especially our NP role. During NP Week, make it known to others how our role has improved healthcare nationwide and be proud of what we have accomplished together. "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it."  Great job UF for sharing the importance of knowing our history with the students.
