Advocate for Your Profession: HB 583

Posted about 1 year ago

February 1, 2023

HB 583 has been filed by Florida State Representative Ralph Massulo. The bill is a title protection bill. In its current form, non-physicians cannot use the title "Doctor" in any form of advertisement, telehealth interaction, text message, or verbal communication without clearly identifying their profession. The bill provides for disciplinary action.

As your state NP organization, FNPN supports all providers being able to use the titles they have earned. FNPN also supports full transparency when using the title “doctor.” If you are an NP, please ensure that you clearly identify yourself as an NP.

  • Please read the entire bill by clicking here.
  • Please get in touch with your legislators and provide them with education about nurse practitioners and other professions that are educated to the doctoral level.
  • Please encourage other doctorally prepared clinicians to do the same.
  • Find your legislators by clicking here.
  • When you contact your legislators, please be professional, succinct, and non-partisan.
  • Consider joining us at Advocacy Days next week, February 8-9, 2023, in Tallahassee, and meet with other NPs and your legislators in person.
  • Finally, please look at your own website, business cards, letterhead, signage, etc., to be sure you are transparent and representing yourself clearly and proudly as a nurse practitioner.
