March 25, 2023--House Bill 1067 passes out of House Healthcare Regulation Committee

Posted about 1 year ago by Vicky Stone-Gale

HB1067, sponsored by Rep. Mike Giallombardo, would remove the requirements that autonomous nurse practitioners work solely in primary care. The legislation would apply to specialty advanced practice registered nurses, or APRNs, such as CNMs, CRNAs, CNSs, and PMHNPs. There was a significant amount of push back on this bill but it passed with an vote of 11-6. Some members who were in support were concerned about the quality of patient care and patient safety without physician supervision. This has one more committee stop but there is a similar bill in the Senate (SB1058) that has not been considered yet. This is sponsored by Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez. Because this bill passed in this committee it DOES NOT mean all APRNs can now practice autonomously. There is a lot of education to do on this bill and there are many questions and concerns. It would still need to pass in the full Senate and House in order for it to be signed into law.
