Week 2 of Legislative session had two deferred NP bills
Posted over 1 year ago by Vicky Stone-Gale
Healthcare Bill SB7016
The Florida Senate unanimously passed the "Live Healthy" initiative, addressing healthcare provider shortages and supporting innovation. Unfortunately, this bill does not include advanced practice nurses or physician assistants to be part of the solution. The House companion bills are still progressing through the
committee process.
Nurse Autonomous Practice Bills Temporarily Postponed in House Committee HB771
The House Healthcare Regulation Subcommittee postponed the consideration of PMHNPs to engage in autonomous practice without a protocol. This bill was taken on by Representative Barnaby for a group called Hims and Hers Health based out of California that is an American Telehealth company. This bill was not discussed with our FNPN lobbyist, Allison Carvajal, and subsequently was placed on the agenda. Once it was discovered, we had Dr. Cindy Parsons, PMHNP go to Tallahassee to testify if needed, and Allison was there for the hearing. Cindy was not called on and this bill was not presented well. This will cause a potential setback for all PMHNPs in Florida. This was a very upsetting set of circumstances.
Another deferred bill (HB 257) by Rep. Mike Giallombardo would enable Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) to practice
autonomously, removing the requirement for written supervisory agreements with physicians. The Senate
has similar companion bills (SB 936 and SB 810) for each respective House bill.
