Participation Requested for Study- Examining Racial Implicit Biases Among Pediatric and Family Nurse Practitioners in Child Welfare Cases: A Quantitative Study

Posted 1 day ago by Regina Saunders

My name is Tasha Patterson, MSN, APRN, AGPCNP-BC, a doctoral candidate at Barry University. I am conducting a research study titled “Examining Racial Implicit Biases Among Pediatric and Family Nurse Practitioners in Child Welfare Cases: A Quantitative Study.” The purpose of this research is to examine the presence of implicit racial bias among pediatric and family nurse practitioners during high-stakes medical decision-making, particularly in child
welfare evaluations.

Child maltreatment evaluations present complex clinical challenges, and prior research has identified personal and implicit biases as potential contributors to misdiagnosis and disparities in child welfare involvement among minority families. This study aligns with national priorities in nursing education and practice that emphasize health equity, ethical clinical judgment, and bias-informed decision-making in vulnerable populations. The findings are
intended to inform nursing education, clinical practice, and future bias-mitigation strategies.

I am recruiting pediatric and family nurse practitioners as potential participants for this study. Eligible participants will complete a brief anonymous online survey, which includes a demographic questionnaire, the Implicit Association Test (IAT), and responses to clinical case
vignette scenarios involving child welfare decision-making. Participation will take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete.

For the purposes of this study, eligible participants must:
(a) be a pediatric nurse practitioner or family nurse practitioner;
(b) have at least one year of pediatric clinical experience;
(c) be currently practicing in a pediatric or family advanced practice role;
(d) be proficient in reading and understanding English; and
(e) have access to the internet via a computer.

Given the sensitive nature of research involving race and stereotyping, this study was designed to prioritize ethical rigor and participant protections. The Barry University Institutional Review Board has reviewed and approved this study.

Participation is voluntary, and all data are collected anonymously. No personally identifying information, including IP addresses or email addresses, will be collected or stored. Should you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to contact me, Tasha Patterson at tasha.patterson@mymail.barry.edu, Dr. Ferrona Beason, at 305-899-3818 or
fbeason@barry.edu. The Barry University Institutional Review Board point of contact is Ms.
Anoush McNamee (305-899-3020; amcnamee@barry.edu).

This is for eligible pediatric and family nurse practitioners. Thank you for your time,
consideration, and support of research aimed at improving equity and clinical decision-making in
child welfare and nursing practice.
