REMINDER! YOUR DEA RENEWAL & MANDATORY C-SUB COURSE INFO HERE!

Posted over 5 years ago by Jean Aertker

January 2020 marked the first month for FL NPs to renew their DEA certification! Wow, it has been 3 years since the bill allowing FL NPs to dx and treats patients requiring a controlled substance was passed. We were the last state in the nation to do so,  after 25 years of lobbying. Thanks to FNPN's great advocacy efforts to get that done for NPs and PAs! So, don't forget -  this is your 3-year recertification period and the agency is strict on renewal dates! Don't lose it! We fought hard to get it! The fee for your DEA renewal is $731.00.

Also, if you are renewing your APRN license (and the option to pay for a separate RN license) in 2020, you must take the FNPN 3-hr Controlled Substance Prescribing Course required by law even if you do not hold a DEA certification or prescribe these medications! FNPN course has gotten great reviews, and it’s easy to sign up for.

FNPN continues to offer this 3-hr course online for you as a member benefit. Don't wait until the last minute to take the course  - as well as the mandatory Human Trafficking Course for license renewal.  The FNPN C-Sub course will be uploaded directly to your CE Broker account once completed. Since all NPs hold national certification in FL, you are exempt from taking the other mandatory FL CE nursing courses.

Please clarify the last part of this memo. If Florida certified NPs are exempt from having to take the other mandatory FL CEU courses, why are they showing up as missing on my CE broker account? I have MORE than enough CEUs but it still shows “ Laws and rules of the board“ as missing. Is this still mandatory?

Last year same experience, uploaded certification as instruction says—still could not renew until I completed course. Called board told NP cert covers me for RN also. Eventually dropped RN same problem?

NPs still have to meet the mandatory Florida BON requirements, even if they are exempt from other CE requirements through their national certification. The two CEs you need are the Human Trafficking and Controlled Substance course. This is because they are required by statute and the others by rule (and so can be overruled by the exemption). I consulted Mr. Joe Baker, the Executive Director of the BON and he confirmed this in an email.
If you go to the following link, there's a statement about this:

Hope this helps!

If you are an FNPN member the C-Sub course is offered for $5 fee (click on the left where it says "controlled Substance Prescribing Course and DEA information" and a drop down will open up with options for the course, DEA registration info, and Guidelines.
